When buying a water filter, it all comes down to what’s contaminants you want to remove from the water. After you’ve decided what contaminants you want to remove, you can decide whether you want the system on your bench or under your kitchen sink.
1. Colour and Taste
If your problem is colour or taste, any carbon filter will get the job done. All coconut shell carbon filters remove chlorine, taste and odours. Make sure the media is NSF Certified and coconut shell activated carbon, NOT coal base carbon.
Uncertified products for drinking water could leach other contaminants into your drinking water.

2. Lead and other Heavy Metals
If your drinking water has heavy metals such as lead, arsenic or mercury you might need an specialised carbon filter with lead removal media. This should be clearly stated in the label of the filter. These ones can be a little more expensive than regular carbon filters in the market.
Again, make sure the media is NSF Certified and coconut shell activated carbon, NOT coal base carbon.
Uncertified products for drinking water could leach other contaminants into your drinking water.

3. Parasites
Chlorine in drinking water does not kill Parasites. Therefore, if you’re drinking tap water, you’re likely to be drinking parasites. However, you can kill parasites by boiling your water.
Giardia Cysts and Cryptosporidium, for example, are removed by the Omnipure 1 Micron Carbon Block Filters. However, not all 1 Micron Carbon filters in the market remove parasites.
Also, parasites are not listed in the label of the filter. Therefore, ask for a laboratory test or a certification from your seller ensuring parasites are removed.
Again, make sure the media is NSF Certified and coconut shell activated carbon, NOT coal base carbon.
Uncertified products for drinking water could leach other contaminants into your drinking water.

4. Bacteria
Chlorine in drinking water will kill bacteria and viruses in your water. However, if your are on rain water, you can kill bacteria and viruses by boiling your water.
Bacteria is a hard one to remove from the water, For bacteria, no matter how small the porosity of the filter is, 0.5 micron, 1 micron or 0.1 microns, you can still get bacteria in your water. Therefore, to avoid false claims, ask for a certification or a laboratory test clearly stating the removal of these pathogens.
BEWARE most filters claim the removal of bacteria. However, this is generally not true. They claim having silver, and silver does NOT kill bacteria, only prevents the reproduction of it. Still, most filters claim the removal of bacteria because they have silver impregnated and mislead most customers.
Again, make sure the media is NSF Certified and coconut shell activated carbon, NOT coal base carbon.
Uncertified products for drinking water could leach other contaminants into your drinking water.

5. Copper
Most customers with high levels of copper in the water are on rainwater. Rainwater is quite acidic and therefore when travelling through the pipes of your house, dissolves the copper and ends up in your drinking water.
In this case, we recommend adding a heavy metal removal filter for your drinking water. Any carbon filter with lead removal properties, will remove copper in your drinking water.
Copper Removal – Recommended Products:
6. Iron
Iron according to Drinking Water Guidelines should be under 0.03mg/l, at this level the Aragon Filter, will remove more than 90% of the iron concentration in the water and the filter should last around a year.
However, if you are on bore water, and your iron levels are above 1mg/l, you will need to remove the iron at the Point Of Entry. Before the pipes divert into your house.
Only an specialised filtration system will remove this contaminant. For this you can contact us for a tailored filtration solution.

7. Calcium
High levels of calcium in drinking water can cause scale building up in your pipes and appliances (coffee machines, kettles, steam ovens, showers).
Unfortunately, carbon filters will NOT remove calcium in your drinking water, only Salt-based water softeners or Reverse Osmosis Systems are certified and tested to remove the calcium in your water.
Other salt-free devices claim calcium reduction. However, this can not be tested or proved with a laboratory test.

8. TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)
Total Dissolved Solids are used as an indicator to measure your overall water quality. A TDS level between 50-150 is considered as suitable and acceptable. High levels are considered unsafe and unfit for human consumption.
Dental clinics require Zero TDS in their water. To achieve this, they install a reverse osmosis system to drop the TDS to 60-40ppm, and at this concentration they add a resin filter in the last stage to drop the TDS to Zero.
Resin filters can reduce the TDS levels, but they need replacing every 3-6 months (depending of the TDS level). They get saturated easily.

9. VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)
“Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that both vaporize into air and dissolve in water. VOCs are pervasive in daily life, because they’re used in industry, agriculture, transportation, and day-to-day activities around the home.” U.S Geological Survey
Most VOCs can be detected by odour. Luckily, most coconut shell activated carbon filters will remove your VOCs.
